U11 Cup Semi Final Match Report vs Cardiff

The U11’s fell just 13 runs short of reaching the summer cup final last night against a competitive Cardiff side.

Batting first, the team were off to a good start with no wickets conceded from the first two pairs. With a damp and slow outfield and some accurate bowling runs came slowly for Cowbridge with nobody able to get into double figures. Top scorers on a net runs basis were Harry MH (8), Herb A (7), George M (5) and Dylan J (4).

Defending a total of just 240, the team set about their fielding with clear focus and determination. After an early breakthrough from George M (1 wkt) it was the middle order bowlers who made good inroads with Tilly D (2), Alex W (2) and Xander P (1 – in his senior team debut) putting Cardiff on the ropes. With 3 overs to go, Cowbridge were in front and despite some tight bowling from the final three bowlers Cardiff had back-end loaded their batters who were ultimately able to take them to victory. A couple of notable mentions must go to Orrin H who kept wicket excellently with two stumpings and a catch whilst only conceding one bye in the entire innings whilst the other was Tilly D who stopped a couple of certain fours with some brave, close-in fielding.

I’m sure many of the team will be disappointed not to have won through but their attitude and determination was excellent on the night.

Key points for every play to consider are;

  1. Accumulate runs through quick singles, everyone could get to 5 even playing forward defensive shots off good bowls and;

  2. Be confident in the field, don’t be afraid to move positions if you can see a gap that needs filling or an opportunity to get someone out. You have the knowledge, now you just need to use it!

Some very positive signs from the group and plenty of good things they can take forward into next season. Well done everyone.
